It happened one night
The sky was thick and overcast
The snow was falling very fast
So to Skelton for a walk went I
Beneath the dark and cloudy sky
I met a girl so young and tender
So for a walk I said I'd send her
and she consented with a laugh
After some good natured chaff
Down the fields and up the roads
Very nigh unto her abode
And so we plodded on our way
Both of us such a lot to say
Before this moment she did display
The fact she'd have to go away
And there she stood in her array
Ready for the train next day
I'm sure the parting was not bad
At any rate it was not sad
And in me she had a friend
So a letter she could send
And at this I'll say amen
We may not see each other again
So as ten o'clock drew nigh
We managed to say our last goodbye
